Private property rights - a concept worth protecting

Last November, Texas voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that prohibits the taking of private property for economic development purposes or for the enhancement of tax revenues.  The outcome was no surprise. Texans have long prized the rights of property owners, and that idea won a solid victory at the ballot box.

While the amendment was designed to trump a controversial United States Supreme Court decision that fell on the side of private developers, property owners in Texas are perhaps even more vulnerable to the eminent domain powers of local governments.

One of the better aspects of our humanity is to search for any good that may come from tragedy. With the recent death of 7–week–old Jada De La Rosa, the people of San Antonio are left to search once again.

Perhaps it is too soon to find solace here. Like the Christmas Day starvation death of Jovonie Ochoa almost six years ago, shock, anger and dismay grab our attention.

But eventually hope did spring from Jovonie's death, in the form of the Blue Ribbon Task Force, a renewed effort to raise public awareness about the evil of child abuse and neglect in San Antonio.

Harlandale Independent School District celebrated its 34th annual Cultural Arts Parade and Festival Sept. 19.

This year's theme, "A Culture of Champions, Cultura de Campeones," was a true reflection of the academic excellence and success that is embedded throughout the Harlandale ISD.

The Harlandale community turned out in record numbers to watch the parade and attend the student performances. This year's cultural Arts Parade and Festival was truly one of the best events experienced in Harlandale.
