Federal Funding to End; State-Only WHP Planned

On March 15, Texas got official word that the federal government will halt federal funding for the Texas Women's Health Program (WHP).

The state's rule excluding Planned Parenthood clinics and other "affiliates" of abortion providers from participating in WHP went into effect on March 14 . The 2011 Texas Legislature barred Planned Parenthood from WHP, but this exclusion is in conflict with longstanding federal statute, which requires that any willing and qualified provider be allowed to participate in Medicaid programs.

CPS Energy Calls High School Juniors to Apply for the SAFE Program

CPS Energy invites high school juniors who live within the utility’s service territory to apply for the Student Assistance for Education (SAFE) Program. SAFE is designed to promote higher education for professional careers in the utility industry by generating interest in math, engineering, computer information systems, and business related fields at the high school level.

Six students will be selected to participate in the SAFE program based upon the student's application, interview, references, and ability to meet all program criteria. Selected students will receive:

Legislative Update - BexarMet Transition

Dear Friends,

I wanted to take a moment to update you on an issue of great importance to our community — the transition of the Bexar Metropolitan Water District to the San Antonio Water System.

As you are aware, BexarMet was abolished by a vote of its ratepayers last November, by a margin of almost 75 percent. While BexarMet no longer exists, the process of converting the utility's assets, liabilities, contracts, equipment and customer services to SAWS is proceeding smoothly.

Credit rating agency Moody's smiled Thursday on the San Antonio Water System's takeover of Bexar Metropolitan Water District.

“The merger is credit positive for BexarMet bondholders, as new oversight by both SAWS... and the city of San Antonio ... is expected to help resolve BexarMet's financial and management challenges,” Moody's said.

SAN ANTONIO - Senator Carlos Uresti welcomed more than 350 participants Monday morning to the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault's 30th Annual Conference at the El Tropicano River Walk Hotel in San Antonio.

The four-day conference will focus on the issue of sexual violence and its effects on Texans.

SAWS Extending Application Deadline for BexarMet Integration Advisory Committee

San Antonio Water System is extending the deadline for applications to participate in the BexarMet Integration Advisory Committee. While applications were originally due, Feb. 24, stakeholders now have until March 9 to apply.

As prescribed by Senate Bill 341, the SAWS Board of Trustees is appointing an advisory committee to help guide the integration process. Applications as well as additional information about the committee are available online.

Judge can't stop sonogram law

AUSTIN — U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks said in a ruling Monday that he can't stop a new sonogram law from taking effect and pointedly suggested that three appellate court judges who overruled him last month had misapplied an earlier federal court decision involving abortion.

The state of Texas will begin enforcing the law Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for the Texas Health Services Commission.

SAWS Seeking Applications for BexarMet Integration Advisory Committee

With the BexarMet dissolution approved by the federal government, San Antonio Water System is now seeking stakeholders to participate in the BexarMet Integration Advisory Committee.

As prescribed by Senate Bill 341, the committee will be appointed by the SAWS Board of Trustees to help guide the integration process. Applications as well as additional information about the committee are available online.

"This advisory committee will ensure that we get a wide range of perspectives from different customers across the former BexarMet service area as the integration process moves forward," said Robert R. Puente, SAWS President/CEO.
