Local businesses are the driving force of our economy, keeping money in our communities and leading to economic development which benefits the community as a whole. Profits of local businesses are reinvested in the community when spending and local tax collections increase, improving schools, roads and quality of life for residents. Nearly 20,000 individuals in District 19, including many in Eagle Pass, are self-employed and are helping to drive their local economic development through their small businesses.

Eagle Pass is one of the fastest growing cities in District 19 and in the region overall. As a result of incredible population growth, new homes are being constructed and new businesses are opening. This leads to further economic development and opportunity for all residents of Eagle Pass. In 2012, there were $346,897,000 worth of retail sales in the City of Eagle Pass and this figure is continuing to grow.

A large percentage of our state budget is derived from sales taxes. Continuing to fund state government meet the needs that are increasing due to population growth and demographics, requires growth in our local economies. One major key to encouraging the growth we rely on at the state level, is partnering with Chambers of Commerce.

In the coming weeks the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce is hosting a number of events including a community breakfast at Huddle House and a free business expo. At these events, you can learn more about issues facing local business-owners, discover small businesses, and get more connected with the community, all while enjoying good food and entertainment with your friends and neighbors.

Local businesses are incredibly vital to Eagle Pass and the surrounding communities. When small businesses succeed, we all reap the benefits through economic development in our communities. I hope you will join the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce at these events in October to support and grow local businesses!
