“Senator Santa” Visits District 19

January 1, 2017

Sen. Carlos Uresti and staff, dressed as ‘Senator Santa’ and his ‘misfits’, began his annual swing through his Southwest Texas senate district to deliver the toys collected at Senator Uresti’s 20th Annual Christmas Party and Toy Drive.

In addition to delivering toys at Head Start programs and day care centers, "Santa" also visits day habilitation facilities and nursing homes, where residents are given a calendar of the Texas State Capitol and a coffee mug.

“This is why I do what I do, to put a smile on a kid's precious face—it’s priceless, and the best part of my job as Senator. I hope one day, these kids think back on today and become inspired to make a difference for the kids in their community.” said Senator Carlos Uresti.

Uresti Veterans Day Reception a Success

December 1, 2016

On a day packed with events honoring our Veterans, Senator Uresti once again hosted Veterans, their families, and those who support Veterans at his San Antonio District Office for a Veterans Day reception.

All branches of the military were represented, and guests enjoyed appetizers, refreshments, and a military themed cake.

Many discussions took place amongst Veterans, Senator Uresti, and staff regarding Veterans benefits and the upcoming legislative session. Many Veterans have spent years cutting through Federal red-tape to access their benefits, and the need to have a state entity, the Texas Veterans Commission, providing assistance in accessing benefits is of great importance to our Veterans.

Message from Carlos - December 2016

December 1, 2016

This autumn has proven to be very busy as I have visited communities across District 19 in preparing for the upcoming legislative session.  I have appreciated all the feedback and great ideas to help make our communities and state a better place to live.  As autumn draws to a close I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the holidays which are quickly approaching.

I want to remind everyone that December 1st is my 20th (yes, 20th!) Annual Toy Drive and Christmas Party! There is still space available, so if you’re reading this before 6pm on Thursday evening, head down to VFW Post 9186, bring a toy, and join us for dinner, door prizes, and a great time!

Uresti Files Bills to Raise Tobacco Age and Improve Voter Registration

December 1, 2016

State Sen. Carlos Uresti filed Senate Bill 183 to increase the legal age to purchase, possess, or consume tobacco and nicotine products in Texas from 18 to 21 years of age, and Senate Bill 228 to allow municipalities the freedom to determine a smoking age that is best for their local community.
“There exists support from a broad coalition of Texans for solutions to address teen smoking, from health care professionals to Veterans.” said Senator Carlos Uresti
Uresti — noting that tobacco use kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined — said cities and the state have an obligation to discourage young people from taking up a habit that is likely to shorten their lives.

Energy Update - December 2016

December 1, 2016

On November 30, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) reached a credible deal to lower production by 1.2 million barrels/day. Subsequently, the international price of oil rose from a November low of $45/barrel to a high of $52/barrel. Economists expect to still see gas prices below $2.00/gallon as the fundamental drivers of the global supply glut continue.

Message from Carlos - November 2016

Government at all levels functions best when citizens participate, and the most basic and important way to participate in our democracy is by voting. If you have watched television, tuned in on the radio, or opened a newspaper in the past 30 days, you are most likely aware that an election is fast approaching. Early voting is underway now until November 4th, and Election Day is November 8th.

If you have questions about anything related to voting, check with your county official who oversees voter registration or the elections administrator. You may also contact the Secretary of State at 1-800-252-VOTE (8683) or online at VoteTexas.gov.

Save the Date! 20th Annual Holiday Party and Toy Drive

November 1, 2016

It seems that every year the holidays begin earlier and earlier, to the point where we often hear Christmas music before Thanksgiving. While we are all preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving, Senator Santa has begun his preparations for another swing through Senate District 19.

Each year I have the opportunity to bring together community leaders and the incredibly generous constituents of SD19 to host a large toy drive in San Antonio. With the toys collected my staff and I dress up in costume to carry out the duties of “Senator Santa” and distribute toys to less fortunate children across SD19.  This is the number one most rewarding duty I perform as Senator.

Senate Finance Committee Meets for Emergency CPS Hearing

November 1, 2016

Following a staggering increase in the number of children who are considered to be in immediate danger of physical or sexual abuse who are not being contacted by Child Protective Services in a timely manner due to high caseloads and unbearable turnover, Senator Uresti called for a special session of the legislature to tackle the issue. In response, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and the Speaker of the House called for DFPS Executive Director Hank Whitman to develop a plan to ensure all reports of abuse are investigated timely in accordance with state law.

Veterans – Please join us on November 11th!

November 1, 2016

On Nov. 11, Texans will make their annual observance of Veterans Day, celebrating the courage, sacrifice, and duty of those who serve and fight to keep our nation free. Veterans will always be a priority for me—not just during the legislative session, but year-round.
